*Observations: To say, "They don't make 'em like this anymore" is an understatement. This beautiful Eisenhower-era Martin D-18 is a very special guitar.
It has definitely seen a lot of action over the years, as there are scars everywhere from many years of picking and music-making. There are lots of pick scratches, dings and nicks all across the top and sides. There is some buckle rash on the back and more scratches and small dings and dents there as well. The back of the neck has thumbnail dents and small scratches and gouges. There are a few deeper scratches here and there that go deeper into the wood, but nothing too severe. There is some moderate gouging into the wood around the soundhole and near the bridge from years of strumming, and some significant finish bubbling on the headstock. The pickguard and saddle may have been replaced but everything else looks to be original. There do not appear to be any cracks anywhere and the French polish finish has darkened to a lovely golden brown color.
Setting aside the cosmetic issues, this guitar is solid as a rock and light as a feather. It plays amazingly well for a guitar of this vintage, and the sound is absolutely wonderful---big, loud, chimey and surprisingly well-balanced for a dreadnought. This is a fabulous guitar ready for many more years of music.
