*Observations: The thunderous sound of the EB-0 is a unique corner of electric bass history. The tone of this petite short-scale monster from Kalamazoo is big, dark, thick and LOUD! Gibsons from this era are difficult to date precisely, but the 831731 serial number and the features present here make a 1969 date likely.
Condition wise, there are some rough spots here. The neck looks to have been at least partially broken off at the body joint. Some cracks run down into the body itself as well. The repair is a little messy but not offensive-looking and appears to be completely stable. Apart from that, the condition is not bad for a well-played bass from this era. There is a lot of deep finish checking everywhere, along with lots of scratches and dents and finish chips both large and small on the body and the neck. There is a body crack by the output jack and a large gouge in the wood near the rear control plate. The "Gibson" logo on the headstock has cracking around it, common for instruments of this era. The frets have some wear but there are no big dents or grooves and there looks to be plenty of life in them.
The pickguard is original but warped. The hardware is original and has a good amount of pitting on the chrome but overall looks good for its age. The bridge cover is still here. The felt on the switchable bridge mute is worn but still functionally mutes the strings. The nut looks like it has been replaced with a synthetic one, possibly micarta or Tusq.
The electronics work well but the pots and caps look like they've been replaced. There is a big non-original toggle switch installed between the pickguard and volume knob that engages a large old square Sprague capacitor that sounds like it's rolling off a little bass, creating a choice between a brighter tone and a darker tone, but make no mistake, all the tones are very dark! The big humbuckers Gibson used on EBs in this era produce a massive tone with tons of low mid but very little high end, perfect for low-down, thumpy 60s R&B or sludgy Doom metal riffs. Tons of fun!
Despite its repairs, mods and cosmetic issues, this bass sounds great, plays great, and most importantly, delivers the all the classic tone and vibe this model is famous for.
