*Observations: This sweet-sounding guitar has been through a lot over the years but it is still very much kicking. The serial number is missing, but its features point to an early '40s birthday. Extensive work has been done on it over the years. At some point in its life it was refinished and its original binding and rosette were replaced with a dark tortoise-shell pattern material. It also appears that a strap button hole was filled on the neck heel and a neck reset was likely performed. This work is pretty rough-looking by today's standards, but everything is functional.
In 2019, other work was done to a much higher quality standard, including repairing a couple of back cracks, re-gluing back braces, and replacing the bridge, saddle, nut, pickguard, and tuners. There is a lot of play wear on the top from many years of music-making---scratches scuffs, dings and gouges. The top is pretty chewed up around the bridge, indicating that the original may have come off in an accident of some kind. The silk-screening on the headstock has worn down, so some of the "Gibson" and "Only a Gibson is Good Enough" banner have rubbed away. The frets have been replaced and they look and feel great. Some J-45s from the WWII era were built without truss rods, but this example has one and it is in good working order. A non-original Martin-style hard shell case is included, along with the receipt for the 2019 repairs, and the original tuners and bridge are in the case pocket.
Even with all of its repairs and cosmetic issues, this guitar sounds terrific. It has all the volume, boom and jangle these instruments are famous for, and playability is good with medium-height action, so it is ready and willing to embark on many more years of action.
