*Observations: After Ernie Ball / Music Man and the late, great Edward Van Halen ended their relationship, EBMM continued producing this model, which they re-dubbed the Axis. Virtually identical to the original VH signature model in every way apart from the pickup switch placement, the Axis continues to embody everything that made the original 1990s EBMM Van Halen guitars so special. Built in 2000, this one is a fine example with its lovely quilt maple top, oil-finished figured Birdseye maple neck and the lovely Translucent Gold finish that Eddie often favored on his Music Man guitars.

Condition is very good for a nearly 25-year old guitar that was played a lot. There is a good amount of play wear on the top of the guitar, consisting mainly of light scuffs and scratches, but there are a few small dings as well. There are some small finish chips on the sides and a slightly larger one on the back’s edge. The back has a few long scratches and a few small dents and the back plate is missing. There is also a small patch on the back where the finish has “smeared” a bit. The frets are in very good shape.

The locking Gotoh Floyd Rose tremolo bridge (set up non-floating against the body, VH-style) stays in tune extremely well. The pickups are the original DiMarzios, a set made exclusively for EBMM identical to the ones designed for Eddie’s original signature guitar, and they are very cool and unique-sounding, with tons of output but with unusual clarity and note separation when high gain is employed. The original volume pot was switched out with a Bourns low friction pot and a Tele-style knob was installed. The original volume knob is in the case. The electronics function perfectly and playability is excellent.

This guitar is a modern classic in every way and it is ready to rock!
