*Observations: This is a very well-made bass that was built by a luthier named Gary Cooper in California in the 70s or early 80s. His Oasis basses found their way into the hands of some great high-profile players, most notably Robert "Kool" Bell of Kool and the Gang.
Cooper worked for Alembic in the 70s and some of that DNA is apparent in this bass, with its lovely all-maple body, brass hardware and 3-piece neck. This one has seen a lot of action but is in overall very good condition. The top has two large patches on either side of the strings that have been worn down to bare wood from thumb and finger resting and there are lots of scratches, small dings and dents everywhere, including a few good-sized ones. The overall look of the bass is still quite striking, with its sleek hippie-chic design and lovely woods. The unusual fine-tuning tailpiece is in working order but a couple of the knobs are a bit stiff. All the other hardware works perfectly with no issues.
There is some fret wear, most notably some light grooves and denting in the lower positions, but playability is absolutely fantastic. The bottoms of the pickups are unmarked but they sound very much like Bartolinis of the era and the passive electronics are in great working order, delivering fat, smooth tones. It is currently set up with flat wound strings and comes with a simple but well-fitting Cort gig bag.
