*Observations: This is a classic all-mahogany PRS guitar from 1987, their third year of production. Electronics and tuners are all original, with stock PRS Vintage Bass and HFS Treble pickups, volume and pickup selector knobs, and the original "collared" PRS locking tuners.
The thinner finish that PRS employed in the early days has sunken a bit, revealing the texture of the mahogany beneath. The Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard, a standard feature on PRS guitars of this era, is a real knockout, as are the abalone/mother of pearl PRS "Moon" inlays. The neck shape is similar to what PRS called the Standard Profile for many years, a rounded but comfortable shape that elegantly splits the difference between a vintage feel and something more modern.
This guitar has definitely been well-loved and played a lot over the years. The top has a few small dents and one tiny finish chip next to the treble pickup. There is a large ding on the treble side of the top, which took a small chunk of wood and finish off. There are a few smaller finish chips along the top's edge, as well as a small finish chip on the back of the lower horn, and a small one on the back of the neck. There is a lot of scratching and swirling all over from play wear, and there is a large scratch on the back along with some buckle wear.
The frets have flattened a bit from years and years of playing, with some significant dents in frets 1 through 8, but playability is still good. A fret dress or a refret could be in order soon for maximum playing comfort. The bridge has had most of its chrome plating eaten away over the years, but the chrome of the tuners is is in much better shape. Knobs are original, and they have been fitted with removable rubber grip rings. The original hard case's tolex has quite a few rough spots and one of the handle's brackets is broken but the hinges and latches work well.
One unique feature of these guitars present here is PRS' famous "Sweet Switch", which rolls off the treble a bit and subtly enhances midrange. Although there is no tone knob, this is a very clever and musical way to do something similar to what most players do with their tone controls. The pickup selector knob here has five settings that are a bit different from what came on later PRS models: full bridge humbucker, full neck humbucker, two split coil pickup combinations and an out of phase option that was later eliminated from the circuit.
A note about this model and its naming: when PRS first came on the scene in 1985 there were two models: the Custom, with its highly figured maple top and see-through finishes and the all-mahogany "PRS Model", usually offered in solid colors. Early in 1987, the "PRS Model" began being listed as the "Standard" model, a designation this guitar maintained for many years after that. So as a 1987 example, this guitar could correctly be called either a "Standard" or a "PRS Model".
Despite the cosmetic issues and fret wear, this is a great example of the wonderful, ground-breaking instruments that put PRS on the path to becoming one of the most revered and important names in the world of guitars, and these early models are only becoming more highly sought after as the years go on.
