*Observations: This is 9th McElroy guitar made, and the very first cutaway model that Brent McElroy built. It was made in his original shop in downtown Seattle in 1998 and it is a very beautiful instrument with its flamed Mahogany back, Ebony binding and wooden rosette.
The pickguard has a lot of light scratching and swirling from typical play wear, with some of that scratching and scuffing extended out to the top between the pickguard and bridge. The lightly-applied nitro finish has sunken a bit, revealing a bit of the texture of the top. There are numerous scatches, dents and dings in the top, ranging from the very small to a few larger ones. There is a particularly deep nick near the cutaway just outside the rosette and a gouge in the wood on the edge of the sound hole. There are scratches and dents on the back as well, the two most notable being in the area between the backstripe and the treble edge. There are also two cloudy areas in the finish on the back that do not polish out. The sides are in a similar condition to the top and back, and there are a couple of cloudy spots there as well. Fret wear is very light.
There is a little more than average relief in the neck, and the truss rod has been adjusted to its maximum tightness. Currently the setup is a bit high, but there is a lot of saddle height (about 6mm above the bridge on the low E string) to allow for lowering the action to make things more comfortable.
There is an under-saddle piezo pickup and 9v internal preamp installed (battery clip is installed against the neck block). The make of the pickup is unknown but it sounds great and works perfectly.
The Sitka Spruce top has aged into a lovely golden color, and the grain is tight with some light bear claw and some darker patches, including what might be a mineral stain about an inch long behind the bridge. The Honduras Mahogany on the back is beautiful, with wavy figuring and some light flame on the lower bout.
This is one handsome, beautiful-sounding hand-made instrument!
